A New Scam Aimed at Business Owners

Hardly a day goes by anymore that we don't hear about, read about or see a new scam.  Most of the new scams originate from the Internet or via Email.  There are, however, some enterprising scammers that are using "old school" techniques.

We received an official looking invoice last week from "Personnel Concepts" to purchase labor law posters for $19.95 plus $5.95 for shipping.  It read, "As an employer in Loveland CO, Mueller Assoc LLC must ensure compliance with revised 2015 labor law posting requirements and replace any outdated notices."  The invoice also includes bold references to OSHA, EEOC and IRS laws as well as a guarantee to pay any fines if we use their "Library of Congress-registered poster".

If you get one of these invoices, THROW IT AWAY!  The posters referred to can be obtained free of charge from the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment by going to https://www.colorado.gov/pacific/cdle/node/32366 as well as the US Department of Labor by going to http://www.dol.gov/compliance/topics/posters.htm .  Many payroll companies and insurance companies offer these posters free of charge, too.
Be sure to call us if you think you are being scammed.

Protect Your Property With a Year-End Tax Deduction

Even though our area did not experience many wildfire threats during 2015, taking measures to mitigate this risk around your home or property always make sense.
Since 2008, the State of Colorado has provided an income tax deduction to property owners for undertaking this type of work.  The deduction is available each year through 2024 and is the lesser of 1) $2,500, 2) owner's taxable income for the year, or 3) 50% of the owner's out-of-pocket expenses.

The types of costs that qualify include:
    • Creating or maintaining a defensible space around structures
    • Establishing fuel breaks
    • Thinning of woody vegetation to reduce risk to structures
    • Chipping, removing or prescribed burning of woody fuels
To qualify, the property must be located in Colorado and within a Wildland-Urban Interface Area.  Many areas along the Front Range, particularly the foothills and mountains will qualify.  Contact your local fire department or fire protection district to make sure.
Be sure to keep receipts as the Department of Revenue may request copies along with proof of property ownership.
